These men have authority to shepherd God’s flock, but they must rule in a spirit of submission to Christ and to one another. Our elders fully subscribe to The Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689 as an accurate summary of their interpretation of Holy Scripture, and each conscientiously affirms their agreement with the theological position papers ratified by our associations of churches. At present our church has one elder, and until the Lord raises up more elders he is accountable not only to the membership of our local church, but also regularly seeks the counsel of an accountability council comprised of several pastors from within our association of churches.
Jerry Slate, Jr. was born in Marietta, GA and was raised in a godly Christian home, the youngest of three children. He was converted to Christ and baptized when he was eight years old. He obtained his B.A. from Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC in 1991, majoring in Bible and minoring in pastoral ministries. In January of 1993 he married his wife, Angela, and the Lord has blessed them with six children: Sam, Luke, Grace, Jack, Malachi, and Margaret. Jerry was ordained for the gospel ministry in November of 2002 and Berean Baptist Church held her first worship service as a church planting venture on the Lord’s Day evening, February 2, 2003. He has served as the Administrative Council chairman for the Georgia Association of Confessional Baptists (GACB) as well as chairman of Reformed Baptist Mission Services (RBMS). Our church has the privilege of sending him out on a number of short term mission trips each year as an extension of our own church’s ministry. Jerry is the co-author (with Dr. Michael Haykin) of Loving God and Neighbor with Samuel Pearce (Lexham Publishers). Jerry’s interests include spending time with his family, reading, biking, hiking, and camping.
