The Lord Jesus Christ alone is the Head of His church; He is our Chief Shepherd and Overseer. In His Holy Word the Lord has ordained that each local church is to be shepherded under the spiritual leadership of a plural body of Biblically-qualified men known as “elders,” “overseers,” or “pastors”. These men are to rule in authority over the flock, but also in submission to Christ and to one another. At the present time in God’s Providence our church has only one elder. Until the Holy Spirit raises up a plurality of elders, our current pastor meets regularly with some faithful men in our church who serve as his prayer and accountability partners.

Jerry Slate, Jr. was raised in a godly Christian home, the
youngest of three children. He was converted to Christ in December of 1977 as an eight year old child and grew up attending a solid Bible-teaching Southern Baptist Church. After graduation from high school, he studied for the pastorate at Columbia Bible College in Columbia, S.C. (now Columbia International University), obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1991 with a major in Bible and a minor in pastoral ministries. Under the influence of several of his professors, the seeds of the Reformed faith were sown in Jerry's heart, ultimately leading him to embrace Calvinisitic, covenantal, and credo-baptistic theological convictions. In November of 2002 Jerry was ordained for the gospel ministry. Berean Baptist Church began holding worship services on February 2, 2003 and formally constituted on March 16, 2005.

In 1993 Jerry married his wife, Angela, and together they presently have five children:  Samuel, Luke, Graceann, Jackson, and Malachi. Jerry's interests include enjoying time with his family, reading, hiking and camping.
